For decades Derechos Humanos Arizona has organized a small pilgrimage in honor of the souls lost crossing the border, this year several dozen Tucsonians have turned out for the Día De Muertos procession to meet with their community members and converse with them about among several pressing issues, the dangers they see in Proposition 314 which will effectively mandate that all police become immigration enforcement without funding or training.
“What can I say? It’s legalized racial profiling which will have horrific effects on our communities.“ said Isabel Garcia, a local attorney and leader with Coalición de Derechos Humanos.
Mrs Garcia, like many, sees Prop 314 as a resumption of a previously struckdown Arizona law, SB 1070. “That’s what’s devastating: the lack of knowledge and lack of empathy. The fact that as a country we’re going backward.”
